Setting a Hash

A Guide for Hares

Choose a location within ~10miles of Malvern — preferably one a large car park.

Then roughly plan a route approximately approx 4–5 miles. You can use a paper OS map or an app on your phone, ideally one that includes footpaths. One such example is OSMmaps. While planning the route it is worth considering short cuts for those that might need one and options for walkers.

Unless you know the land well, walk your proposed trail first, noting suitable points for checks and making best use of features which may not be apparent from the map alone. Seek out the muddy bits — hashers love it (this is known as SHIGGY).

Next obtain some flour or saw dust to mark the trail — please make sure it is easily biodegradable.

Lay the trail, preferably no earlier than the day before the run (the day of the run is best).

Plan in checks to give slower runners a chance to catch the front runners. Where that can't be done consider a Hash Halt or Fish hook.

Finally, brief the pack on any unusual hazards before the run and make sure all gates are closed after the pack passes through. ON, ON!
