About
Our beginnings
Malvern H3 – the beginnings. 31st March 1981. Brian Edmundson, an occasional hasher with Bicester H3 was transferred to Malvern in late 1980 as WO2. Corinne and I went to visit over the winter and on a cold sunny day, sitting up on the hills I suggested to him Malvern was the right place to start a hash ( I was fit then and actually liked hills). Military hashes were common in those days and it was unusual for Malvern not to have had one (although subsequent rumour suggested there may have been one in the early 1970’s). So that was it. I visited a few times over the winter and we got the ideas together. We got Colonel Fairey on our side who had hashed abroad (can’t remember where, but could guess his handle) and Brian recruited Dick Fawcett to get a pack together (and typical Brian, to do the bulk of the work). The date was set for the inaugural hash to be Monday 30th March 1981. Although traditional hashing days were Monday, we’d agreed to bring a (free military)bus load of hashers from Bicester but as they hashed on Monday Malvern was postponed until the next day, Tuesday 31st. The venue was set from the MOD Police Club and Dick Fawcett and I set off to lay a trail, Dick making studious notes on the way around on how it had to be done. The write up attached was ‘fairly’ accurate. “The pack quickly understood the game…” as witnessed by the fact that 34 years later…! I suspect that was down to Dick, who as inaugural On-Sec did all the work. The last I heard he was in the US; does anyone know anything more? I’m pleased to see you still use the original bar checks occasionally. They were the original KL markings and came via Singapore H3 in the 1960’s, through Bicester in 1970’s to Malvern. Very few in the UK still use them. I actually had to stay the night as, having driven in the afternoon to lay the trail, I got too pissed to drive home! I hashed with Malvern occasionally for a few years after but moved back to Bicester in 1986 so have hashed their ever since. I think the last time I hashed with you guys was about 15 years ago but on one visit Oxford H3 was planned by Daglocks and Wha de Say on the way back in the car, and they were founded in 1999. Probably should make an effort to revisit, but well done. I thought you’d only last ten runs!!!!! Oh me of little faith.
Upward and On-onward
We regularly attract a good crowd in the summer months and sustain solid numbers through the winter. We are a friendly bunch who always give a warm welcome to Hash newcomers of whatever capability.
